Excellent article, confirming many of the particulars from prior discussions on this topic. With regard the Civil War, the writer does not take up the obvious disadvantages of cavalrymen having neither revolvers nor sabers. This was the case with large numbers of Southern mounted troops armed solely with single-shot carbines or, more frequently, rifled muskets. Able to fight as well as any infantry on foot, they were helpless if attacked while mounted.
