If there ever was anything at all that could be taken as 'proof' that any of the Southern leadership was involved or even had knowledge of the plots, the kidnapping or the assasination, we would still be paying the price. We are still paying is some ways for the attempt to leave the Union but there would have been a lot more bloodshed after April, 1865 if they had been able to prove a connection to the events with Lincoln.
If I remember right, Mary Todd Lincoln left the place where they took Abe and went back to the White House. She was not with him when he died. We know she had some mental unbalance and it really tipped over a few years later but it just struck me as odd she didn't stay at his side at that time. Maybe she was persuaded to leave by others who may have been concerned about her 'delicate nerves', I don't know. Just passing strange that a wife would leave a dying husbands side.
