The General (movie)

I am a big fan of Buster Keaton's "The General". I've been doing a little research and discovered it was filmed at Cottage Grove, Oregon back in 1927. The railroad was the Oregon & Pacific Eastern RR and is now gone. The BLM has coverted the old railroad bed into a paved bike/hiking trail. A new bridge crossing the Row River, where the steam locamotive "The Texas" plunged into the river in the movie, is on the trail. The wreckage of the "The Texas" and the bridge stayed in the river until World War II were it was removed for scrape metal. If you have never been to this part of Oregon it is beautiful. This area is known for its many covered bridges. Although I have passed this place in my travels several times, I think I see a new vacation destination in my future.
