I have read that some of the bloodiest fighting took place between opposing forces from the same state, like the Tennesseans at Ft. Pillow. Half the Union garrison was the 13th TN and the others were USCT. It was a battle fought almost entirely between Southerners, more than half of whom were natives of Tennessee. I often wonder about the difficulties people had living with neighbors in post war Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Arkansas.
