While that's true, I'm comfortable that prior to March 1865, no Black Confederate military command of company size or larger ever existed. Tens of thousands of slaves and free men of color supported the Confederate military effort in a variety of important ways. However, organized companies, battalions and regiments composed of slaves or FMC are not going to be found in Confederate records. We are more likely to find records of female companies, battalions and regiments in Confederate service.
