And one month later, his buddy, Col. Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth of the 7th NY Inf. was killed in self defense while invading a hotel in Alexandria, VA for the purpose of terrorizing law abiding Confederate citizens and stealing a flag. The yankees declared Ellsworth to be a martyr and the first casualty of the WBTS. The hotel owner, James W. Jackson, was remembered for many years as a hero who defended his property against the first armed invasion of private property during the War. He was killed by one of Ellsworth's storm troopers.
