I've seen the leg. The tibia and fibula are pretty well shattered. It is said Sickles smoked a cigar while it was being amputated. He was criticized for moving too far forward in the Peach Orchard at Little Round Top on the second day, exposing his flanks. My folks in the 18th Georgia were among those who opposed him. If memory serves, Barksdale of Mississippi was killed nearby. He was to the left of Wofford's Brigade, including the 18th. I have also heard that in later years, Sickles visited his leg when it went on display. People were different then. (I knew about Murietta and Three Fingered Jack, but not Osceola.) Stan
