Upon studying the returns of Fort Sumter during the period covered from Dec. - Mar. 1860-61; Major Anderson performed a court martial upon three men unknown offenses, their sentences were removed by the Dept. Hdqs. Also, Company H- (Doubleday's company) lost three men in February- two men decided not to re-enlist and got out, another deserted; was apparently caught, allowed to return to the army without having a trial, but he did not return to Fort Sumter. This man was named John McQuillan or McQuellen.

So Anderson had discipline problems in his command and actually lost valuable men when he could not afford to.
