1st Artillery, Co.s 'H' and 'E', had serious problems- arrest, desertions, sickness, court-martials, bad officers; for such a small command it was difficult for a half dozen officers to maintain good order. Col. Gardner had been dealing with this lot for months and then was abruptly removed and replaced with kind-hearted Major Anderson- who knew no one, knew none of the detailed history, and most important, did not know Doubleday...his second in command.

I also see that Gardner is not given much credit for initiating the necessary improvements to Fort Moultrie and requesting more troops- which he did. Also, if there was going to be an attack on Fort Moultrie it should have been in October- when all of its guns were dismounted and the walls wide open to anyone who wanted in. I think it very interesting that Gardner did not feel the need to move his command from Moultrie during this period to Sumter as Anderson finally did when Fort Moultrie was put into good order.
