"Cracker Culture" is a personal favorite, one of the few books (among many that attempt to do so) which actually explain real differences between Southern and Northern cultures in the mid-19th century. Of course they're different, but the explanations are quite useful and entertaining. McWhinney writes chapters on each aspect of culture. His formula for each chapter includes the cultural antecedents of the differences across the Atlantic.
