David, thanks for posting this. All I have ever heard or scene portrayed Houston as pro-union always. Now I see that like so many others who were pro-union and later became Confederate leaders that he had reached a point where he too became pro-Confederate. I am weak on Texas history.

A couple of years ago I stopped off at the San Jacinto monument and battlefield with my wife and son. They do include some very good Confederate artifacts at the museum but if I recall correctly even there I saw no mention of anything like this about Gen. Houston.

That's a great place to visit if you ever get close to Houston and I bet an old Navy man like yourself would enjoy visiting Battleship Texas which is there as well.
