Thanks David. This is my first notice that Sam Houston had publicly denounced the invasion and not only reaffirmed his allegiance to Texas, but also to the Confederacy. Months earlier, he had predicted the North would subjugate the South (perhaps he always believed it), but he is clearly making an attempt to boost morale.

"Mr. Lincoln and his Cabinet have usurped the powers of Congress, and have waged war against the sovereign States, and have thereby not only absolved the States, but all the people of the several States, from their allegiance to his Government, the Federal Government having ceased to exist by his acts of usurpation."

Hurrah for General Houston!
