Re: Hampton Roads Peace Conference, 1865

The new "Lincoln" movie, I understand, has twisted the spirit of this conference to imply that the Confederates were more distressed over the issue of the 13th Amendment than the actual issues discussed at length during this meeting. The entire conference is covered in Stephens memoirs.

I find it an eye opener that Lincoln was using the threat of immediate emancipation to get the Confederates to rejoin the Union, and once rejoined, stop the moves to cause immediate emancipation AND he considered the E.P. was considered a small contribution to the freedom of only 200,000 of the 6 million slaves (as we already knew) and not the actual end of slavery.
