I've stumbled over the most probable answer to the recent onslaught against Southern Confederate history. The word is "redeemed". Because of the successful elections of certain Southern politicians (Clinton- Carter- and even Bush) to the high office, those who would like to erase Confederate pride, have the impression the South has "redeemed" itself from its Confederate past. From this they are now emboldened to strike out against what they want destroyed- thinking they will not meet much resistance- and will make themselves important in the public eye for it.
