Yes it was. Two suicide planes hitting one of those small destroyer escorts on picket. Sank very quickly with only a few survivors.

He was in a gun mount and somehow survived after hours in the water. The pick up ships/boats couldn't stop in the water with enemy planes overhead.

Mom finally convinced him to go to Norfolk for one of the annual reunions of survivors. It was very hard on him. He rarely talked about the war.

He was sure mad at me when I joined the Marine Corps.
