Deaths during the war made a difference in the 1870 Census, but ex-confederates were moving a lot, changing their names and out right avoiding the 1870 Census after the war. As these men aged and settled down, more and more of them start showing up on the later census. I call it the "Lost Census" or lets drop out until things settle down, while I start a new life. Just my thoughts on the 1870 Census.
