Even taking into account of the ex-slave population, the male/female ratio difference from 1860 to 1880 Census is staggering. I cannot believe 10s of thousands of ex-Confederates were hiding out for twenty years from the Census taker (in several Southern States a census was taken every year in the 1800s.)
