I read the portion where the African Americans, free or slave, were specifically targeted for theft of their money. Since they were not either allowed to use or did not trust banks and paper money, they ALL kept caches of coin, gold or silver, hidden away. Their whole life they saved some coin somewhere in their home. Some as much as $500. This was quickly found out by the Union troops who either out right robbed them or tricked them from their money.
