James Humbles, Bugler, Company C, 1st Regiment Virginia Cavalry

The file for James Humbles contains but one muster card, that for the period of July & Aug,, 1861 in which he is recorded as present. It records he enlisted April 18, 1861 at Lexington by Mathew Y. White for one year, Under remarks it is written: “Free negro, mustering officer thinks this man ??????? (should not) be mustered in.”

Based on the above remarks and the fact that he does not appear on any further Company C muster reports, it would appear that he was not allowed to served as a Confederate soldier thereafter.
