The South Carolina in the Civil War Message Board

Battery Wagner

Ok, here is my brief story...
Myself, and my two roomates like to take 2 day trips on our days off, and we all have an interest in military and civil war history. So, one day we are watching "Glory" and thought "Wow, that would be a great two day trip!" Problem is we live in Florida, and I'm pretty sure that the battle depicted at the end of "Glory" takes place just north of Charleston on an island somewhere. I figured that the National Park Service would have a site there... (buzzer sound) Guess Again! NPS knew nothing about it. Maybe the state of South Carolina... (buzzer sound again) Nope! I then tried searching the net for some information which reveals a ton of information on the actual battle and scads of stuff on African American roles in the Civil War, but a whole lot of nothing on the sites current state.

So thats what I'm hoping someone here might be able to help with... Is Battery Wagner still in existence? Are there any sorts of Monuments or museums, or anything of interest there? I'm starting to fear that, like so much of this Great Nation, some jackass has turned the site into a condo, or something of that nature.

I apologize if this isn't the type of post that belongs on a board such as this, and would appreciate any help that y'all might be able to provide.

Mark.
