Once it could be determined that their health would allow it, standard practice called for exchanged prisoners to be sent home on furlough. The furlough would have been for thirty days at least. For that reason none of the men exchanged during March 1865 would have been at Appomattox.

Evidently the service card should read Cherokee County SC rather than Ala. Perhaps a clerk at the War Department made an error.
