Re: Defense Works of Charleston

The Official Atlas to Accompany the Official Records has a number of plates. There are drawings of Forts Moultrie and Johnson, and of Morris Island and Cumming's Point on pp. 42-43, in 1861; a plate on p. 86, showing in not much detail the engagment at Secessionville, but also giving a general view of some of the forts southwest of Charleston; a plate of Morris Island in the summer of 1863, showing some details of the defenses; detailed plates on pp. 128-129, including profiles of typical sections of some of the works -- good details, under the direction of General Gilmore, who was an engineer officer before and after the war; a series of photographs/drawings -- I'm not sure which -- of the interior of Fort Moultrie on pp. 282-83; ; and drawings of details of Fort Sumter on pp. 284-85; a Confederate map of the Charleston defenses in November 1863, on pp. 302-03, locating the forts and batteries. I am sure that there may be a few more. There is no precise chronological arrangement in the Atlas, and maps crop up out of the blue. Hope this helps.
