The only history of the 5th is Asbury Coward's Memoirs, The South Carolinians, published about 1973, and is pretty superficial. He was the colonel fo the regimeynt for much of the war. The original manuscript is located at South Caroliniana Library, Columbia, and was edited by his descendants. There is a lot of material in Confederate Veteran, and a number of letters of men of the 5th are found in the 12 volume set published by the South Carolina Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Recollections and Reminiscences ... The other source which is of great help is the editing of the letters of John Bratton, which thought privately published, is very well done.
