Provisional Army of the Confederate States of America. It was provisional until the Confederate government became a reality.

Provisional Army of Virginia
On April 27, 1861, the Virginia Convention passed an ordinance providing for a provisional army to consist of two regiments of artillary, eight regiments of infantry, one regiment of riflemen, and one regiment of cavalry. An ordinance was passed April 19, providing for the appointment of a "commander of the military and naval forces of Virginia" and on April 23, Robert E. Lee formally accepted the appointment with the rank of major general. Lee's commission as major general in the Provisional Army was dated from April 24, 1861. He was also commissioned inthe same grade in the Volunteer Forces of Virginia, April 24, 1861. The ordinance of April 27 stated that preference for appointments in the Provisional Army would be given to those who had held, or who then held, commissions in the army of the United States, and to those who "have resigned or shall resign with a view to offer their services to this State." The ordinance further declared that officers of the Provisional Army would take rank and precedence over all officers of the same grade of the volunteers and militia, with regard to date of commission. Officers of the Provisional Army could be assigned to duty with their respective rank with the Volunteer Forces.
