It was a provisional, or temporary force comprised of conscripts and volunteers that was created for the duration of the war, as compared to the nation's standing military force, the Confederate Regular Army. Its modern counterpart was the Army of the United States, comprised of draftees and volunteers during the WWII-post Vietnam era, which was a separate entity from the regular United States Army.
