Here's some information on the Major Emanuel mentioned; hope it is of some interest.

Major William Pledger Emanuel (1830?–1879), Commanding, 12th Battalion SC Cavalry, was a resident of Marlboro District, SC, and a graduate of the South Carolina Military Academy (the Citadel). He entered Confederate service in command of Captain W. P. Emanuel’s Co., SC Volunteers (subsequently, Co. E, 4th SC Cavalry), at Georgetown, SC, on 4 February 1862. He was promoted to major of the 12th Battalion SC Cavalry on 1 May 1862, and retained that rank when the 10th and 12th Battalions SC Cavalry were consolidated to form the 4th SC Cavalry Regiment on 16 December 1862. Following the Union raid on the Combahee River of 2 June 1863, he was placed under arrest by order of General P. G. T. Beauregard and charged with neglect in the conduct of his command. Court martial proceedings were begun, but were suspended indefinitely on 10 July 1863, due to the siege of Charleston. He was finally acquitted of the charges in February 1864, and went with his regiment to Virginia the following April. Captured at Trevilian Station, VA, on 11 June 1864, he was sent to Point Lookout, MD, and later transferred to Fort Delaware. The following September, he was returned to South Carolina, and was one of the “Immortal Six Hundred” Confederate officers held prisoner on Morris Island. Records indicate that he was paroled at Charleston on 15 December 1864. Following the war, he served as sheriff of Marlboro County, SC from 1876 until his death in 1879.
