Fred, thanks very much for this. I just wanted to know if he was the person, listed as "Isard" a master's mate on the CSS SUMTER, in 1861. It would seem that the description almost may confirm that he was that person, though I would like to see final concrete proof. The person named as just Isard (no first name shown) was on leave from the CSS SUMTER in 1861, and had sent in his resignation to the Navy department, but he was instead listed as absent without leave. There is no further record of what happened subsequently, but I feel that perhaps his resignation was eventually accepted, and he then went into the 11th South Carolina Infantry, then resigned, as you note, in December, 1864, and probably tried to return to the Navy. When he stated that he was "desirous of returning to the Navy, which is my old profession," I wonder if he was actually referring to the Confederate Navy, or his old occupation in the United States Navy, prior to the war. I certainly would like to clear up this mystery. Thanks for your kind help, anyway. If anyone else has further data on Izard, please let me know. Thank you in advance.
