John Liddy prisoner

I am trying to trace a man, John Liddy, born in Ireland, who served in the Confederate military. He is connected to my family and I have only oral history of him from older members of the family.

He was taken prisoner, and at some point was brought back to Charleston on ship with other prisoners, apparently to be released. His wife, Margaret Fitzgibbon, also born in Ireland, waited with her young boy as the men disembarked or were carried off the ship, but her husband did not appear. She asked one of the crew, perhaps an officer, about John Liddy and was told the he was aboard but would be coming off in a box. He had died on the sea voyage to Charleston.

I have searched via the Internet and learned there was a John Liddy who served in Gaillard's Battalion, which later became the 27th South Carolina Infantry. The same man, or perhaps another John Liddy, served in Estill's Arsenal Guard.

I have dates for the formation of those units, and in the case of Gaillard's, also the date it was combined with another unit to form the 27th.

Liddy is probably buried somewhere in South Carolina, and the information I have says Gaillard's was formed from men of Sumter, Union and Calhoun Counties

I'd say his wife must have been practically destitute, so it might be more likely that he was buried at public expense.

I would be very grateful for any hints or clues on this man's identity.
