Re: Dozier, Leonard F. M.D. and Adj. 21st S.C. Inf

Leonard F. Dozier was appointed Assistant Surgeon, P.A.C.S., June 1, 1864, to rank from Jan. 7, 1864. An Assistant Surgeon serves at the pay grade of a captain, but would not be addressed as captain. Like other medical officers, assignments were received from the Medical Director's Office. That means he was not on roll with any military command.

After his appointment, Dozier was ordered to report to the Medical Director of Longstreet's Corps at Russellville, Tenn., Jan. 30, 1864, and assigned to duty with Huger's Artillery Battalion. During the summer of 1864 Dozier briefly served as assistant surgeon of a Georgia sharpshooter battalion in Wofford's Brigade. He received a parole with other members of the Army of Northern Virginia as Assistant Surgeon of Huger's Artillery Battalion.

Apparently he lived in California after the war, as he appears on the 1880 census in that state.
