Re: Broom/e Families roles during the War

Eric:

Andrew Jackson Broome, D/Hampton's Legion Infantry/MOunted Infantry enlsited at Petersburg, Va 1 Aug 63, was shown as present on the few existant muster rolls through December 1864, and appreas as paroled at Appomattox mounted. When he enlisted, the Legion infantry was in the South Carolina Brigade, Micah Jenkins commanding, which was then assigned to the Department of Richmond. In September 1863 the unit was sent west with Longstreet's corps, and the brigade was attached to Hood's division, but it arrived too late to particupate in the fighting at Chicamauga.

In March 1864 the Legion was detached from Longstreet's corps and sent back to South Carolina, where it was mounted amd designated as mounted infantrty. It joined a brigade of three regiments specifically formed to protect Richmond, and from June 1864 until the fall of Richmond this brigade operated exclusively north of the James River.

His father, William J. Broom, also enlsited at Petersburg on the same date. He was detailed as a teamster from April through June 1864, was present but dismounted from Sep through December 1864, and was paroled at Appomattox, dismounted.

William was born 25 Jul 1820, married Eliza ? at some time prewar, and died near Belton, Anderson County, S. C., on 31 Dec 1876. He is buried in the Belton City Cemetery.

Andrew was born 25 Nov 45, and moved to Panola County, Misspostwar, and married Martha C. ? postwar, I assume in Mississippi. He there adopted the use of "e" on his name, and is buried at Fredonia Methodist Church, near Como, in Panola County. He died on 12 Jul 1925.

William and his family were living in Anderson District (the forerunner of the county) in 1860. The place of enlistment shown as Petersburg makes it virtually certain that the two voluntarily enlisted rather than being conscripted, although Andrew was fast approaching conscript age, and perhaps they wanted to get ahead of the curve.

Please contact me direct at Sturkey@wctel.net. I would like to try to obtain some additional personal information on both of these men -- maiden name of wives, education, if known, occupation, etc.
