civil war colored troops

Hoping that someone has an interest in the Civil War colored troops and will share.
I find many of those who served who could possibly be ancestors of mine, but find difficulty connecting
the surnames for which I have found 26 various spellings.
I am especially interested in a THOMAS WHELLAN of Georgetown, SC who is listed on a Freedmen's Bank Record.
I believe he is the son of CLARISSA WHILDEN of 1870 Christ Church, SC.
Other surnames which may be of pertinence are: WILDON, WILDEN, WELDON.
Most sincerely,
carol wheeldin warren.
