Dear Ms. Warren,

It states on the Freedmen's Land Record that he was a member of the 40th USCT, Company "F?". The land record also states he was a member of the 128th USCT. I've looked at an online roster for the "40th" and I do not see a Thomas Whellan, or similar spelling in this company; however, there is a Thomas Wilson in Company "F" of this unit. It would not be unusual for a transcriber to confuse a cursive "s" and a "d". I have not been able to find a pension file for this man; however, the pension indexes I have available to me, do not have either the 40th or 128th USCT.

I'm sure some others on this site will try to help. I have planned for quite some time to setup a USCT discussion site, but have held off because I wanted to enlist the support of some authors and historians who specialize in these units. So far, I've received a half-hearted response. There is another site that does have a number of USCT researchers at AfriGeneas.Com . If we can't give you the answers you're searching for here, try AfriGeneas.Com.

Thanks for participating and good luck with your search.

Jim Martin
