The South Carolina in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Capt. R. Press Smith, 1st SC Inf.

You got a bingo!

I see him and his father often in the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery where for ten years I have been the civil war specialist. I have a folder just for the two of them. SR. was QM 27th S.C. Inf. Died while visiting his son out here.
They have family tombstones and also new VA upright granite tombstones. They both mentioned in good terms in his large war journal in the Southern Historical Society Papers ( I have the CD) by the former C.O.(62-64 until wounded out of the war in VA) of the 25th S. C. Inf., Lt. Col. John Gotea Pressley. Pressley lies very close to both of them and they were all friends out here within a circle of former confederates (this town was very pro CSA during the war and the city militia could not be counted on to help surpress a large number of CSA folks in this county at various times of civil unrest related to the war). Jr. was our first county physician. His grandson, a WWII fighter pilot, lives nearby and even saw his wife today at a county historical society meeting.

Anyone so interested can contact me direct and I will send a paper I have on them and photo of their tombstones.
