Re: More letters from the 15th South Carolina Infa

The 1860 census of Barnwell District SC suggests that John S. Page was a plantation manager. Men in a position of responsibilty were unlikely to simply abandon them and become a volunteer in a war that most believed would not last more than a few months.

Several adult men named John Page lived in South Carolina at this time. Without conclusive evidence of an enlistment by John Page of Barnwell District, we're simpy guessing that he enrolled during the war. Sometimes we have to guess, but it's best to exhaust the facts first.

At least three men named John Chance lived in Georgia and one in Alabama in 1860. You'll need to know where 'your' John Chance lived in order to match him to a military record. If I must guess, a parole was signed by John T. Chance of Co. "B", 66th Georgia Regiment. I don't know which of the three John Chances who lived in Georgia he might be, if any of them.

The same is true of Evan Talley, someone I could not identify on the census of eith North or South Carolina. There is a military record under this name in a South Carolina Regiment.

If you're wondering why the middle initial isn't conclusive evidence, here's why. A cursive capital letter 'I' looks almost exactly like a 'J', J' can appear much like 'S' and 'S' can be confused with 'L' &c.
