Mark --

This soldier was wounded in the fighting at Fussell's Mill, Aug. 14, 1864. Some accounts calls this 2nd Deep Bottom, located on New Market Heights, just east of Richmond. Field's Division (formerly Hood's) was forced back and took position near White's Tavern, where renewed fighting took place on August 16th.

An inspection report dated Sept. 20, 1864, shows 302 officers and men present of 602 total on roll, Col. R. E. Bowen, commanding. Weapons named are Enfields and Springfields. Under 'remarks' we read the following --

Accoutrements are serviceable and ammunition in boxes in good condition, but many
of the boxes (Cart.) are much worn.
Much of the clothing of the men is badly worn, especially the shoes. Twenty-eight (28)
men bare foot & at least a fifth nearly so.
Found the office and yard of the Q M in good condition. Regular system of book-
keeping in office with vouchers and papers carefully filed and well prepared.
Cannot account for the present quarter, not finished upon.
The greater part of the transportation of the brigade was off foraging which the
Q. M. informs me is in serviceable and fair condition, but adds, "Harnesses
fast becoming unseviceable for want of grease. All efforts to obtain oil
for harness have proved fruitless."
Did not inspect the office and accounts of the C.S. (Maj. Elford)
being absent acting temporarily with the Division.
Found the papers and the accounts of the A. C. S. (Capt. S. L. Love) complete and
correct.
Ordnance train consists of four wagons & teams all in fair condition
Thirty-seven (37) boxes ammuntion in wagons but no guns nor accoutrements.

Respectfully submitted,
J. Banks Lyle
Capt. Co. "C", 5th S.C. Infantry
