Re: Lt. Thomas A. Jeffers of the 2nd SC Cavalry

Thanks for this additional info Wade! I remember reading in Chris Fonvielle's book about the 2nd Cavalry participating in the Wilmington Campaign. I also went on a Civil War tour several years ago in NC with Chris as our guide in the Wilmington area and remember him talking about the 2nd being there. One reason I paid special attention to them being at Wilmington is because I had a great-great grandfather in Cobb’s Legion Cavalry Battalion, which I’m sure you already know was in Hampton’s Brigade at Brandy Station, VA and during the rest of the Gettysburg Campaign, along with the 1st and 2nd SC Cavalries, the 1st NC Cavalry, Phillips’ Legion Cavalry and the Jeff Davis Legion Cavalry. Earlier this year I read a letter in OR Volume 47 which was written by Wade Hampton to Joe Johnston on 27 Mar 1865. In this correspondence Hampton recommended the 2nd be temporarily added to Logan's Brigade during the Carolinas Campaign. If they did actually join Logan’s Brigade, then they were reunited with three of the other units that were part of Hampton’s Brigade during the Gettysburg Campaign (Cobb’s Legion Cavalry, Phillips’ Legion Cavalry and the Jeff Davis Legion Cavalry). Since many of the men in the 2nd Cavalry had served as scouts for Hampton earlier in the war, including Lt. Jeffers, I believe Hampton may have once again tasked some of them to serve as scouts during the Carolinas Campaign. If this is true, then I believe Lt. Jeffers may have been one of these scouts. I’ll send you an e-mail later to let you know where I’m going with this.
