Re: Gregg's Battery, Manigault's Battalion Artille

The principal Battle of James Island occurred on June 16,1862, these three men were last recorded present on their companies March/April 1864 muster. Why they were not recorded on the following four company muster rolls is a mystery.

Light Artillery March 24,1864 at Charleston, last recorded present on the March/April 1864 muster where the company was stationed at the Artillery X-Roads, thereafter " . . . the company has marched from Gordonsville, Va. via Mine Run to Spotsylvania C. H., thence to Hanover Junction, thence to Cold Harbor via Mechanicsville, has been engaged in the battles of Spotsyvania C. H., Jericho Ford, Hanover Junction and Cold Harbor. On 4" June 1864 was transferred to Department of Ga. So. Ca, Florida etc, and reported to Brig. Genl Taliferro, James Island. South Carolina where they were last recorded on the Nov/Dec 1864 muster roll at Battery Ryan Left James Island, S. C.

W H. Richardson, age 21, enlisted as a Private in Company C Manigault's Battalion S. C. Light Artillery April 15, 1862 at Marion C. H., there is a reference to a Court Martial re General Order 90/1 August 7, 1863, last shown present on March/April 1864 muster

Manigault's Battalion, South Carolina Artillery

18th Heavy Artillery Battalion [often called the Siege Train Artillery Battalion] was organized during the spring of 1862 with three companies. Many of the men were from Charleston. It was assigned to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and fought at Fort Sumter, Grimball's Landing, Battery Wagner, James Island, and John's Island. In June, 1864, Company C was transferred to Pegram's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia and was active in the Petersburg siege. That December it returned to the battalion which later served as infantry in the Army of Tennessee. It surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Majors Charles Alston, Jr. and Edward Manigault.
