Re: Deserters of the Civil War
In Response To: Re: Deserters of the Civil War ()

My gg-grandfather, William Stephen Holt, was, I believe, a deserter from the Union Army in PA. Ancestry database shows an enlistment in Oct 1863 & desertion in Apr, 1864. He married in St. Louis in 1867 & mysteriously disappeared in 1874, when his 3rd child was born. I believe he was on the run from time of desertion until 1874. I can find no death record or cemetery for him. Family Bible only says born in 1838 in Philadelphia, died in 1874 in "Texas". There is a Texas Township in Wayne County, PA. Would he, if he had been caught, been transported there to some kind of place where he was ultimately killed for being a deserter? I have exhausted Texas County, MO; Texas Township, IL; and the state of Texas looking for him. Thanks for any leads. Bonnie Owens
