I think I have a pic of unif of PSS...!

Hello all,
I can't remember if I have shared this with any of y'all before but I have a pic of one of my ancestors in a S.C. Confderate uniform. I am pretty sure it is of my gr. gr. grandfather Lt. John Warren White, who along with three of his brothers were among the original members of Capt. John Blasingame's "Spartan Rifles" from Spartanburg, S.C., and eventually wound up in Co. "K", PSS. I have a pic of John and my g.g.grandmother taken in the 1850s or '60s. I can't tell if that is a uniform he is wearing in that pic or not. But we have always known it is him. But the pic in the uniform I am not 100% sure it is him. But an expert looked at the two pics and said it could be him, just taken a few years apart. He said at first glance the hair styles, combing direction, etc, were too different. But then he realized one was a negative type and one had been reversed or something like that. He reversed the one and then he said they were quite similar. You be the judge (John Warren White is not to be confused with another J.W. White (similar initials)on S.C.'s roles). Anyway, he was at first a corporal in his company when it was in the 5th S.C. then promoted to 1st Lt when he and most of his company went over to the PSS as Co. "K". He was severely wounded at Seven Pines, losing the use of one arm, at least temporarily. He resigned and went home and, evidently healed up, re-enlisted as a private in his old Co. "K", PSS in 1864. In an effort to retake Ft. Harrison at Petersburg in Sept. 1864 he was shot through the neck. His one remaining brother, young 16 or 17 yr old Jasper "Jack" White was with him and tried to take him home. He died in Dannville, Va in Oct and was buried there. There were five White brothers from Spartanburg (there were other White, McDowell, and Foster cousins in the unit I am sure), only one made it home, Jasper. Here is their little bit for the Cause in the order of their deaths by year:
1. Pvt. William White: Co. "K", PSS; Died 1862 of Dyptheria in Chizzumbarro Hospital in Richmond. Buried somewhere in Richmond.
2. Pvt. Rufus Belton White: Co. "K", PSS; died 1862; lost right arm at Fraser's Farm, died from it. Buried somewhere there, in or near Richmond (do they have a CS graveyard at or near Frayser's Farm?).
3. Pvt. Hiram White, Jr.: Died 1862 in or near Battle of Antietum; Orinally in same company but the only brother to stay in 5th S.C.
4. Corporal, then 1st Lt., then Pvt., John Warren White: Co. "K", PSS: Died Oct. 1864 due to wounds recieved at Petersburg.
5. Jasper "Jack" White: not sure what unit, probably Co. "K" PSS. Only 16 or 17 in 1864 (new recruit?), but was there because he was with John when he was wounded and tried to bring him home to Spartanburg.

One more note about the pic. The original, in my Uncle's posession, is a glass type picture, whatever they call that. He "escorted" me to Laser copy to make copies of it. The original copy of it when blown up showed it to be a remarkable pic. It was almost a color photo somehow or had been colorized by a danged good professional. The man wears a dark frock coat with what appears to be white tape around his collar (but sometimes colors were reversed in those old pics). His collar, inside the white tape trim, appears to be almost darker or green or something, as are the band around the kepi which sits on a small table next to him. It is hard to tell about the cuffs The kepi has a S.C. tree on the front of it. The man wears a maroon sash with two belts. One is a white sword belt with a funny looking sword and the other is a narrow leather belt on which a pistl is worn. Very neat pic. Anyway, the copy I have, being a copy of a copy of a copy, is not quite as good as the first ones, but still a good pic.

If anyone is interested in seeing the pics of John Warren White, Co. "K", PSS the one of which I believe to be an early PSS uniform let me know and I will e-mail it to you. This site has never notified me of responses so contact me at k98@bellsouth.net.

Take care and forgive the long post.
