Great Grandfather

I would like to know if anyone can tell me anything about how to find out about my great grandfather's Civil War Records. My family has a letter written by a judge in South Carolina stating that my g-grandfather was one of the soldiers that fired the first shot at Fort Sumter. His name was Max Milliam Michel(Michele). I am in possession of his leather dispatch pouch. I believe he served under a General Beauregard. He was also wounnded. I also have a picture of him wearing some kind of medal around his neck. He died in some kind of home for soldiers in Austin, Texas and is buried in the Civil War Cemetary there. I would appreciate anyones input and help on this.
