"galvanized" Yankees

I had a relative named Aaron Newton, brother to my gg grandfather Joshua Newton, who didn't return to his native Lawrence Co., Tennessee after the war. Aaron and Joshua were in Company C, 32nd Tennessee Infantry. I received a hint today that Aaron might have become a "galvanized" Yankee from Rock Island prison and went west to fight Indians, possibly with the 3rd Regiment, US Volunteer Infantry. There are two Aaron Newtons in the Soldier and Sailors System (US), one in the 3rd Regiment, US Volunteer Infantry, and one in Unassigned US Volunteer Infantry. Other things I have found hinted that he died "abt. 1864?". Anyone out there who knows more about this subject than I have found so far?
