For anyone interested I visited the Tennessee Archives and copied 21 records, the last of which showed that Aaron Newton enlisted in the US Army for frontier service on October 15th, 1864 at Rock Island, Illinois after being captured at Chattanooga on Nov. 25th, 1863. I am 99.9% positive that the Aaron Newton listed in the Soldiers and Sailors System as being in Co. D, 3rd Regiment, US Volunteer Infantry is my gg grandfather's brother. This is becoming quite and interesting story, a galvanized Yankee in the family, who as far as I know never came home to Tennessee after the war.
