Re: 16th Battalion TN Cavalry (CSA)

Isaac Jeffers, Private, Company D, 16th Battalion (Neal’s) Tennessee Cavalry, enlisted September 20, 1862 at Kingston by Capt. Brown for 3 years or the war, captured November 29, 1863, North of Hiwassee River, Rebel Deserter who voluntarily subscribed to the oath of Allegiance to the United States Government at the offices of F. Young, Deputy Provost Marshal of Roane County, Tenn., December, 1863, and permitted to go at large within Union lines, resident of Tennessee, his file contains a note from the Adjutant General, U. S. Army to the Confederate Pension Department, Kentucky dated June 26, 1916, no further records

Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Tennessee

Note, I would hazard a guess that he escaped during his transport to Louisville, Ky. somewhere near Knoxville. Thence, on hiking to his home in Scott county he was apprehended by Union forces. Here, I suppose he swore oath to the US and subsequently released.
