Pvt Daniel D Markwood was in Co E subordinate to 2nd Lt Lewis Markwood My db indicates Lewis remained 2nd Lt for the duration of the war. Daniel however: rose to Captain in Company. the 8th was not mustered out until 11 Sept 65 at Knoxville. They were in pursuit of Jeff Davis in the closing days of the war. they didn't get Davis but they did intercept part of the CS treasury. They returned to E. Tn. in April and had the task of rounding up guerillas and bushwhackers with the order to spare the government the expence of a trial. The 8th fought in the earth work at Ft Sanders at Knoxville for the want of horses. Mounted they skirmished at Crab Orchard, Ky, Cumberland Gap. Strawberry Plains,Tn Mossey Creek, Kansas, fought at Morristown, Russellville, skirmished at Bulls Gap and it was Pvt Andrew J Campbell Co I of the 8th that killed General John Hunt Morgan at Greenville.
