Alan, one of my ancestors was Lt. Col. Benjamin F. Johns of the 7th Mississippi. During the fight for Atlanta the 9th Mississippi was under his command. I believe your post would explain why he was never promoted to full Colonel. I need to look over the service records of the 9th Mississippi Colonels to try and confirm that, I guess.
