Alan,

Thanks so much. You are helping to clear up some of the mystery about this particular Civil War ancestor. Thanks to for the links on the Inmans and " Cold Mountian." My Land family roots are in Western North Carolina. While they were strong Confederates across the mountians in North Carolina my family tree here in East Tennessee has both Blue and Gray. Seems I remember reading that men from Vaughn's Brigade ( 60th, 61st, and 62nd regiments ) paroled at Vicksburg, had their parole papers taken from them. This added to the distrust of Confederate authorities already questioning their loyalty to the Southern cause and resulted in delay in reorganizing the regiments once they were exchanged. I suspect my ancestor was a " conscript." He gives his age at 34 in the 1860 census. The 2nd draft law in Sept.1862 probably got him. While the records from the the Dept of the Cumberland say " Due to be held in Louisville " the 1911 letter says " Due to be released." Maybe he escaped and made it back home ???? Thanks again,
Glenn
