Although I show an Albert Colbaugh in my roster, that was a mistake. The War Department clerks who compiled the Confederate Army service records place all cards for Albert in Robert E's file. Reason appears to be that Albert only shows on Federal prisoner of war records with coincide with Robert's capture records. Prior regimental muster rolls for Company D show no muster records for an Albert. I would assume that Federal records may be a transcriptional error, perhaps because of the last four letters of their given names, i. e., " . . . bert," Robert, Albert.

I have revised my roster biogrpahical entry for Robert as follows:

Colbough, Robert, 4th Cpl., Co. D, born 1843 at Piney Flats, Sullivan Co., Tenn., enlisted for 12 months December 30, 1861 at Knoxville, Tenn. as Pvt., elected 4th Cpl. May 10, 1862, captured and paroled at Vicksburg July 4-9, 1863, present at March 11, 1864 muster, captured at Carter Station/Elizebethtown, Tenn. March 28, 1865, sent to Chattonooga, Tenn. March 12, arrived at Military Prison, Louisville, Ky. April 27, 1865, transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio arriving April 30, subscribed Oath of Allegiance to the US at Camp Chase June 10, 1865, description: place of residence-Meigs Co., Tenn.; complexion-dark; hair-black; eyes-black; height-5 ft. 9 in.; age 22, a number of record cards show as Albert Colbough, farm hand for his father George Washington Colbough pre-war, married Annis Torbit December 4, 1866, she died in 1885, married Nancy Rockholt February 1891, he died in 1903 at Chattanooga, Tenn., brother Nathan, cousin Samual and John Colbaugh, brother or cousin, also served in Co. D (M268 Roll 290) [related decendent Barry Colbaugh, Cartersville, GA and Sandi Hackney, Nashville, Tenn.]

And here is what the regiment was up to the day Robert was captured:

03 28 1865 [Tuesday]

Cpl. Robert Colbough, Co. D, 43rd Tenn. Cav., [Vaughn's Brigade] was captured at Carter Station[Depot]/Elizebethtown, Tenn. by forces under Maj. Gen. Thomas commanding Dept. of the Cumberland (M268 Roll 291)

That day, Gen. R. E. Lee in a report to the Sec. of the War, records:

"General Early who has been so far as Bristol telegraphs from Abingdon, on the 27th, that the enemy with considerable force of infantry and cavalry has advanced into East Tennessee and is repairing the railroad. Vaughn has been compelled to fall back across the Watauga and Holston. Enemy's cavalry advanced to Carter's Station, on the Wataug, but is reported to have retired."

03 29 1865 [Wednesday]

Vaughn's scouts report that Stoneman with about 4,000 cavalry passed Elizabethtown, on the Watauga, and is going up the Watauga. He may intend to cross by Lenoir to the Yadkin or turn down New River into Grayson and the Lead Mines. (OR 49/2, 1171, Lee)
