Service under Brig. Gen. Vaughn in the Shenandoah Valley would explain the capture at Staunton, Va. Survivors of several Tennessee commands went to Virginia with Vaughn. At the end of the war Vaughn's brigade was one of those assigned to the escort of Jefferson Davis.
