Mary --

There are countless motels, hotels, lodges &c. in the area, as well as bed-and-breakfast options. You should check with the City of Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce for other attractions in the area.

The 4th Kentucky Regiment belonged to Croxton's Brigade. About forty-five soldiers were involved in the defense of Snodgrass Hill. A much larger number of officers and men from this regiment participated in a wanton destruction of the University of Alabama on April 3, 1865. An inquiry on the Alabama message board concerning this regiment will doubtless elicit helpful responses concerning its activities in the final campaign.

You should also contact the National Park Service at Chickamauga/Chattanooga:

The park bookstore has a map showing the exact location of every marker and monument in the park. The 4th Kentucky Regiment has a marker. At least one park ranger reads these boards, and could provide an answer as to whether your ancestor's name appears on a marker there.

You may read more about the regiment after it was mounted in David Evans, Sherman's Horesemen. Evans tells the story of the ill-fated McCook raid, which ended in the near destruction of that officer's command at Brown's Mill, near Newnan, Ga., July 30, 1864. Plans are in place for a state park there, and Newnan would be a fine spot to add to your visit.
