Does anyone know how Tennessee Confederate (& other states CSA regiments) received their numerical designation? In other words, how did the 1st TN. Infantry become the 1st, the 2nd the 2nd & so on?
Possibly the order in which they formed for state service, or order in which they were transferred to Confederate service? Just curious.
